Using e-competencies

We are now well down the path of e-journaling with teachers and students alike at Vardon School. And yet I am just beginning my research into e-competencies. I have suddenly realised how enormous the area of e-competencies is and am certainly interested in finding our a whole lot more about them. The term "e-competencies has been coined to explain the merging of the "key competencies" from the New Zealand Curriculum with a set of highly desirable, almost required skills in order to function safely using modern 21st century learning tools.

Research into the concept of eCompetencies led to me discovering the following name : Juan Cristobel Cobo Romani whose study on the analyses of effective of policies, strategies and programmes that promote the acquisition of e-literacies, I am yet to read in full. His work provides a redefinition of the term ‘e-competencies which I will read with interest.

An overview of the 5 eCompetencies as I understand them at present is below and there are a miriad of resources available on TKI to go into much more detail. There are some really great videos of work undertaken her in NZ which keeps the context real.
  1. E-Awareness
  2. Technical literacy
  3. Media literacy
  4. Digital literacy and
  5. Informational literacy
