Kathy Caprino is an American business woman who works from home. Her first hour of work bigins when she alarm goes off, and looks like this:
- Be still and be grateful
- Bring to heart and mind exactly what I’d like to experience
- Helped my son start off his day
- Prioritized my work for the day
- Launched into the most important, juicy task that will help me feel I’ve accomplished something important
My working day, doesn't usually begin until I actually get to work, however there are those days when I take calls from sick teachers who need a reliever (but they are the minority!). On those days, early morning phone calls can begin anywhere from 6:00am to 6.45am. Then the phone calls to the relievers may take up to 20 minutes on a really bad day!
So, not considering those days, my first working hour generaly looks like this:
Arrive at school and turn on my computer
- Open Outlook
- Post the staff off site and the relievers in for the day on the Intranet system
- Read any e-mails
- Deposit e-mails to be attended to in the future into my outlook calendar on the right date
- Respond to urgent e-mails
- Prioritise my calendar and
- Make a coffee
- Engage with colleagues in the staffroom - show an interest in them and their lives
- Dialogue!
How do you spend your first hour of work?
Hi Myra
ReplyDeleteInteresting post. It's really made me think about my first hour of work and if I tackle the most juicy task, like Kathy Caprino mentions above.
My first hour also begins when I enter school;
1. unlcok the classroom and ICT cupboard
2. turn on my laptop and check my emails
3. write up the days programme (if I haven't already)
4. write up my maths and reading taskboards for the day (also finish planning if needed)
By this time it's 8:30am when the chn come into class...
5. Say hello to chn who enter the door and engage in dialogue with them
6. Photocopy (if needed)
That's my list. Of course that's a normal morning! I must say it's mostly organisational things?!?
I may have a meeting, have emails to reply to, send reminder emails and bluebook messages to staff, tick off my to-do-list' that has been getting longer each day and more....
