Another super busy week went by! Administrative activities seem to take up the vast majority of my time. The best time spent this week in terms of real "Leadership" was the hour I spent as mentor to a beginning teacher. During this hour, I was able to ask her plenty of questions that enabled her to reflect on her personal professional progress. We engage in open, reflective dialogue about what matters to her right now. This is what "leading" feels like! In this roll, I feel very much like the lead learner... able to guide the conversation, without having to have all the answers myself. I will savour this part of my week EVERY week, proud to be involved in a developing teacher leader in our school.
What doesn't feel like leadership, is answering the hundreds of e-mails, or signing off on the many cheques, or entering data into NOVOPAY, or approving this or that!
The other part that feels like new "leadership" is my role with the Board of Trustees. In this aspect, I feel very much like a learner leader! I am about to attend my first BOT meeting as the Principal and have submitted a very lengthy report based on the very useful model used by the previous Principal!
Something I did from day one, was began to take notes and fill in the components of my Board report as this term progresses. This has meant I have added items/events/actions/recommendations as they crop up- and I don't think I have forgotten anything!
One thing I will need to keep an eye on is - the difference between day-to-day management and communication with the board, and Governance!
Day-to-day management versus Governance! A balancing act.
What things do you think are day to day management?
What things to you think is Governance?
