Social Stories Help students settle in

We are experiencing some success with students settling into school as New Entrants after having personalised Social Stories written for them. Some of the children ha

A number of children are entering school with specific learning needs, or English as their Second Language. The transition to school can be very scary and daunting. Using the strategy of storying, the move into the school environment can help ease some worries for both the student and their families as it explains a little about how things work around here.

Including real photos of places and people, as well as some fun clip art as part of the story and reading the story each night, helps children quickly become familiar with the new environment as well as the people they will get to know.

Another successful application has been using a social story to explain how our School Tabloids day works. The younger children felt more confident when the 'different' day arrived. There were no tears! Usually we have quite a few upset children, and this just didn't happen this year!

Even an autistic child, only days into school, managed to cope really well! Much to the surprise and delight of his parents and teacher.
